1. access & entrance & inlet : 都有“入口”的意思。


access /ˈækses/ :

多表示进入的 方式或手段 ，也表示参加、进入、使用或观看某事物的权力、机会，意义较为抽象。

也表示入口，此时意思与entrance相近，但不像entrance那样指门口或入口，而是指通向某处入口的路或通道。


eg. You need a password to get access to the computer system.

你需要一个密码才能进入这个电脑系统。

The bathroom gives access to the corridor.

浴室通向走廊。


entrance /ˈentrəns/ :

指进入某一建筑物或到达某地的 权力或机会 ，或加入某个组织的许可。尤指建筑物的门洞等具体的入口。

eg. The entrance to the building has been blocked up.

大楼的入口已被封了起来。

Great success in entrance examination.

祝入学考试成功。


inlet /ˈɪnlet/ :

指可以进入之处，入口，进入某个围起来的地方的入口。

eg. A long trailer blocked the inlet to the parking lot.

一辆长拖车堵住了停车场的入口。


2. adopted & adoptive & foster :

都指“收养的”


adopted /əˈdɑːptɪd/ ：

指被收养的，有被动之义。

eg. an adopted child 被收养的孩子


adoptive /əˈdɑːptɪv/ ：

指收养的，收养关系的，有主动的意思。

eg. the adoptive father/mother/parents 养父/养母/养父母


foster /ˈfɔstɚ/ :

指收养的，寄养的，养育的，一般作定语。

eg. the foster father/mother/parents 养父/养母/养父母 the foster children/daughter/son 养子女/养女/养子


3. advertisement & advert &commercial ：

都有“广告”的意思。


advertisement /ˌædvərˈtaɪzmənt/ ：

其含义较宽泛，除了指报纸杂志上以书面印刷形式刊登的广告外，也可以指电视节目等。在非正式场合，可以写成ad.。

eg. an advertisement on television

在电视上播放的一则广告


advert /ˈædvɜːrt/ :

为英式英语用词，可与advertisement换用。

eg. I saw an advert in a magazine and I was just calling to get some details.

我在一本杂志上看到一个广告，我打电话来是想了解一些细节。


commercial /kəˈmɜːrʃl/ :

商业广告，主要指在电视或广播节目中插入的或促销产品的商业性广告。强调的是商业和盈利。

eg. Turn the channel. There are too many commercials.

换一下频道，太多广告了。


4. advocate & propagandize :

都有“宣传、鼓动、倡导”的意思。


advocate /'ædvəkeɪt/ ：

指倡导拥护，表示对某一主张或者目标的支持和倡导。

eg. He advocates reducing military spending.

他主张削减军费开支。


propagandize /ˌprɑːpəˈɡændaɪz/ :

原义为宣传，现常指政府或政党宣传教义、教条、声明等，常含有贬义。

eg. A handful of his followers are propagandizing his doctrine.

他的一小撮追随者正在宣扬他的教义。
